QUEEN NANNY, THE JAMAICAN 'YAA ASANTEWAA'. THE MOTHER OF ALL JAMAICANS.

NANNY OF THE MAROONS.

Queen Nanny, otherwise known as Nanny of the maroons, is a Jamaican hero who helped get her people out of slavery from the British in the 18th Century. Her bravery and courage only goes to prove the tremendous power in femininity, as she is compared to Yaa Asantewaa, a powerful and courageous woman who led her people in the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana into victories in battles fought between her people and the British.

Nanny was never a slave, she was always free and there was no documentation to prove that she came to the Island as a slave. How she came to be on the Island is still a mystery.

Queen Nanny was able to free her Jamaican people with various techniques:

It is said that she possessed various powers which were beyond the thinking of the British, the mere sight of her presence made the British slavers shake to their core. She trained her people and fortified  them and together they conquered the British after winning lots of battles with them.
It is said that she could appear and disappear, she could catch bullets and also redirect bullets to her enemies who were shooting at her and possessed lots of other powers which aided her and the Jamaican slaves to conquer the British always that the British had no option than to call for a truce and let them free and they had no other option.
Her powers she possessed is no lie or fabrication as in Ghana and in Africa today there are people who still possess some of these powers, and some are displayed during celebrations of festivals.
Nanny town, was established after the victorious battles and the slaves now in Jamaica who hailed from Ghana were now able to live freely in their own town free from oppression.
Cudjoe's town was also another town established for the slaves. It was named after Cudjoe or Captain Cudjoe as he is sometimes called, Cudjoe was Queen Nanny's brother and he was one of the maroon leaders, he was also known to be very courageous and a key leader who also aided the runaway slaves in the defeat of the British in several battles during the time of Queen Nanny.
Queen Nanny was indeed a great hero who shaped the future of her people. As a remembrance of their great mother, the Jamaican government placed her picture on their $500 bill.

This is a way of acknowledging the great vision and sacrifice she lay down for the now free Jamaicans.

She was born in Ghana on 1688 and died in 1733.

Nanny's Monument is located in Moore Town, Portland, Jamaica.

She was declared a national heroine in 1976.
Queen Nanny is credited with freeing over 800 enslaved men and women from captivity.
Many of the freed men and women settled in Nanny Town ran by fellow Maroons.
Nanny of the Maroons was very knowledgeable about healing methods and herbs. This made her a very skilled physical and spiritual healer.
